I have a huge bucket list of things I would like to do (especially before settling down & all that fun stuff) and NYC is on that list. I interned at Rent the Runway the summer before graduating and absolutely loved it. I thought that living there for the summer would satisfy my dream of living in New York and I would move past that phase of my life. Although I lived in NJ and commuted in so I didn’t get the full New York experience. Soooo technically I never lived there and obviously the phase did not pass. 🙂
I talked to Chris about different places to move to (San Francisco, Denver, Charleston), I even talk to HR at my current company to transfer to the new office opening in Dallas but it didn’t make the cut. I’m not sure if I’m necessarily a Texas girl. So while we floated the idea of a few cities on the west coast I looked for a few jobs in Charlotte to pass the time. The idea of New York came up when I was exploring an open position for a company down here and Chris saw that the position was also available in NY. So over sushi (obviously) we decided that NY could be a great potential. We have family and friends that are there and it would be nice to live there while Chris’ siblings were there.
The real decision maker:
Chris is probably going to kill me for sharing this but this is my version of how this decision was made.
We went on a hike the next day, following the sushi dinner (and an amazing date to the orchestra). It wasn’t one of our more scenic hikes but it was through a forest and strenuous. I (being the impatience person that I am) brought up this potential move and wanted to figure out all of the details. The more we talked about it, the more it started to make sense and that it was actually something that could happen soon. (Colorado wouldn’t have been able to happen until 2017 – and like I said I’m not the most patient person.) So naturally I bet Chris that if I carried him up this hill we could move to NYC… and if you know me I achieve the small victories to get what I want. So the next thing I know I’m having a celebratory dance at the top of the hill.
That week I contacted an old boss and he put me in contact with a friend who was hiring and bam. Job.
Obviously there was a little more to it than that but it happened pretty quickly so really the stars were aligning to get me to NYC ASAP.
I’m moving up in May so if feel free to give me any tips and especially restaurants to try!
